Abstract
Four male and two female rats died at the initial 5.0 g/kg oral dose, making it necessary to do an LD50 screen. The dose levels determined from the screen results were 2.5, 3.3, 4.2 and 5.0 g/kg. Deaths occurred at all levels except for the 2.5 g/kg level. Deaths occurred generally by Day 4 with predeath toxic signs of lethargy, chromorhinorrhea, chromodacryorrhea, emaciation, piloerection, body surfaces stained brown, ptosis, ataxia, diarrhea, tremors, tachypnea and prostration. Necropsy of the spontaneous deaths revealed lung and gastro- intestinal abnormalities. Toxic signs, seen in the survivors, included lethargy, chromorhinorrhea, piloerection, ptosis, chromodacryorrhea, ataxia, diarrhea, flaccid muscle tone, body surfaces stained brown and hyperactivity. All animals were generally normal from Day 9 to Day 14. Body weight changes of the Survivors were normal. Recropsy was normal in most survivors. However, a few had liver or kidney abnormalities.
