Abstract
Topics addressed include a brief description of the nation's growing highway noise problem, the effects of noise on health and welfare and how to reduce noise exposures in the proximity of highways. After discussing the problem easy methods of identifying noise-hotspots are discussed and methods to obtain relief are elaborated upon. The cases when noise barriers are a possible solution are stressed, and guidance is given to initiate action. In addition, case histories and specific technical details are presented to assist those in charge of planning and constructing barriers. The last section contains a listing of probable noise hotspots along interstate highways in standard metropolitan statistical areas over one million and aerial photos of selected hotspots.
