Abstract
The mutagenicity of acetone cyanohydrin was evaluated in Salmonella tester strains TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537, and TA1538, both in the presence and absence of added metabolic activation by Aroclor-induced rat liver S9 fraction. Based on preliminary toxicity determinations, acetone cyanohydrin, diluted with DMSO, was tested for mutagenicity at concentrations of 0, 6.1, 18.3, 55.0, 165, and 495 ug/plate using the plate incorporation method. Acetone cyanohydrin was toxic to all the Salmonella strains at concentrations of 165 and 495 ug/ml without activation and at a concentration of 495 ug/ml with activation. Acetone cyanohydrin did not cause a reproducible positive response in any of the bacterial tester strains, either with or without metabolic activation.
