Abstract
A study was designed to evaluate in detail the ocular response of three volatile silicone fluids. A single application of 0.1 ml of each test material was instilled into the right eye of three male rabbits. Observations were made by slit lamp biomicroscope at 1, 6, 24, 48 and 72 hours following treatment. No pain response, conjunctival swelling or discharge, corneal injury or iridal congestion were observed in any of the animals during the study. However, a very slight conjunctival redness was noted in the treated eyes of most of the rabbits. The incidence of this redness decreased over time until all treated eyes appeared normal when examined after 48 hours. Among the three fluids tested, TX-83-2400-30 appears slightly better as far as the incidence and duration of ocular response are concerned. The data of this study demonstrates that the silicone fluids with higher vapor pressure clear more rapidly from the ocular surface, thus reducing the duration of the ocular response. None of the animals exhibited a positive eye irritant score at any reading interval and it is therefore concluded that these volatile silicone fluids are non-irritant to the eyes of rabbits.
