Abstract
2-Nitropropane was evaluated for potential primary eye irritation using six New Zealand Uhite rabbits. Each rabbit was administered 0.1 ml of the test article to the conjunctival sac of one eye. The untreated contralateral eye of each rabbit served as a control. Treated and untreated eyes were examined and ocular irritation was scored according to the Draise method at 24, 48 and 72 hours after test article instillation. No positive ocular responses were noted following test article instillation. According to 16 CFR Part 1500, 2-Nitropropane is not considered a primary eye -irritant. The maximum average eye irritation score was 1.0 at 24 hours after dose administration. Based on this score, 2-Nitropropane is considered minimally irritating to rabbit eyes. The untreated eye of all animals appeared normal throughout the observation period.
