Abstract
The cell interacts with its environment via the plasma membrane. Alteration of the composition/structure of this membrane can result in altered cell function. Therefore, the ability to detect subtle changes in the condition of the membrane may be of considerable value in predicting the response of cells to toxic insult. Tributyltin is a membrane-active toxicant of considerable environmental concern since it is extensively employed as a component of marine antifouling paints. Its effect on the murine erythroleukemic cell by flow cytometry has been investigated and has been observed to be toxic at extremely low levels (micromolar concentrations). These data have been utilized recently by the state of Virginia to lower their saltwater standard for this chemical.
