Abstract
The proposed study is to be a technological assessment of genetic engineering as it applies to commercial industries and its potential effects on the environment. This includes a detailed literature review and state of the art analysis of genetic engineering, an analysis of how applied genetics will affect public health and public welfare, its probable impact on the environmental policies and an analysis of knowledge gaps, including identification of inadequacies of analytical methods and techniques. Additionally, the socioeconomic impact of genetic engineering on commercial industry will be examined. The approach will include a literature review of five key industrial sectors: Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic, Industrial Chemical, Energy, Food Manufacturing and Preservation, and Mining. Areas that will be examined at length include: Environment and Populations, Government Policy, and Technology. The research will be carried out in three phases: (1) Development of Data Base, (2) Potential Hazards of Genetic Engineering, and (3) Analysis of Findings.
