Abstract
Nine runoff plots and artifically created rainfall were utilized to evaluate the removal by vegetative filter strips (VFS) of suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus from runoff leaving agricultural production areas. The ability of VFS to reduce the amount of suspended solids was highly variable and seemed to depend especially on the extent to which the runoff concentrated into discrete channels through the vegetated filters. When data from all tests were averaged, mass losses of total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus were reduced by 72%, 17% and 41% respectively for 15 ft. wide filters and 86%, 51% and 53% for 30 ft. wide filters.
