Abstract
The 1981 VISTTA field study characterized the composition and appearance of particlerich plumes from three different sources. The paper examines the VISTTA observation from the perspective of an idealized theory, and compares them with the predictions of two plume visibility models. The optics predictions of the two models are less accurate for plumes dominated by particle scattering than they are for plumes dominated by NO2 absorption. Inaccurate prediction of plume particle size distributions can be identified as one important source of error. (Copyright (c) Atmospheric Environment, 1986.)
