Abstract
This report was prepared as part of the Ohio River Basin Energy Study (ORBES), a multi-disciplinary research program supported by the Environmental Protection Agency. The major objectives of this part of the ORBES research are to summarize and evaluate the literature on metabolic responses of plants to low levels of SOx, their acidic conversion products, and oxidants, particularly O3; assemble data on emission concentrations around representative primary emission sources in the study region; also to determine the distribution and acreages of sensitive crop and forest species in the areas near emission sources; to review and apply damage functions for key sensitive species to estimate losses in yield from a range of current and projected pollutant levels; and to estimate probable maximum and minimum effects of the emissions and transformation products on the regional yield of crop and forest products.
