Abstract
The report addresses the product quality, waste reduction, and economic issues involved in recycling automotive and heavy-duty engine coolants. The specific recycling units evaluated are a fleet-size unit and a portable unit, both based on the technology of chemical filtration. Coolant recycling was found to have good potential as a means of waste reduction and cost savings. But further improvements are necessary in the product quality achieved by these units. Product quality was evaluated by conducting selected performance tests recommended in ASTM D 3306, and ASTM D 4985 standards, and by chemical characterization of the spent, recycled, and virgin coolants.
