Abstract
The marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum, was exposed to the pesticides hexachlorocyclopentadiene, EPN, chlorpyrifos, carbophenothion, and Atrazine and examined for death of cells with Evans blue, a mortal stain. All pesticides caused death of cells, but significant mortality occurred at concentrations greater than the EC50. The insecticide, Amdro, did not kill the marine algae S. costatum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Isochrysis galbana, Chorella sp., or Dunaliella tertiolecta. However, Amdro was very inhibitory to algal population growth at low concentrations.
