Abstract |
The use of industrial boilers for the destruction of hazardous wastes is increasing at a rapid rate. This is partly due to the fact that the practice changes a 'negative value' waste material into a 'positive value' fuel and partly to the fact that current RCRA regulations specifically exempt facilities that burn wastes in energy producing operations from complying with RCRA incineration mandates. This study evaluated the concept with the purpose of answering the following questions: What is the present and projected magnitude of hazardous waste combustion in boilers. Which waste materials and boiler types are the most compatible, and what quantities of these are available. What are the potential mechanical difficulties or environmental hazards associated with this practice. |
