Abstract |
The in vitro absorption of four glycol ethers (2-methoxyethanol, 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethanol) through human skin has been measured from the neat liquid. The mean study rates of absorption were: 2-methoxyethanol 1.66mg/cm(sup 2)/4 (SD + or - 0.79; n = 10); 2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethanol 0.21mg/cm(sup 2)/hr (SD + or - 0.16; n = 11); 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethanol 0.13mg/cm(sup 2)/hr (SD + or - 0.11; n = 10); and 2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethanol 0.033mg/cm(sup 2)/hr (SD + or - 0.02; n = 9). The results indicate that apart from the 2-methoxyethanol, the other glycol ethers penetrated the epidermis slowly, when applied as a neat liquid. None of the glycol ethers studied as judged by tritiated water permeability determinations, were shown to alter significantly the 'diffusion barrier' properties of the epidermal membranes following eight hours continual contact. |
