Abstract
The paper discusses the design of an aerosol mass spectral interface (AMSI). The AMSI is a portable inlet system for aerosol chemical analysis by mass spectrometry. the aerosol product is analyzed real-time, on-line using a mass spectrometer (MS) to perform separatons. The AMSI can also be operated to introduce only specific sizes of aerosol particles into the MS, allowing for chemical characterization based on particle size. The AMSI has been successfully coupled with a particle beam MS and an atmospheric MS. The AMSI was designed for the analysis of aerosol consumer products to enable the industry to develop data allowing product formulations for lower emitting and more efficacious products. Representative surrogate aerosol products have been tested for chemical composition with the AMSI. These surrogate aerosols were used to design, construct, and evaluate the AMSI.
