Abstract |
A rapid assessment study to determine the toxicity and bioaccumulation of three chlorinated cyclodiene insecticide intermediates; hexachlorocyclopentadiene, hexachloronorbornadiene, and heptachloronorbornene to fathead minnow larvae and early juveniles was conducted for 30 days under flow-through conditions. A concentration of 7.3 micrograms/liter of hexachlorocyclopentadiene caused significant decreases in survival after 4 days. Growth of fish exposed for 30 days was not significantly decreased at any of the concentrations tested. The highest concentration of hexachlorocyclopentadiene having no adverse effect was 3.7 micrograms/liter. Concentrations of 122 and 226 micrograms/liter of hexachloronorbornadiene caused significant decreases in survival after 4 days. Growth of 30 day-old larvae was significantly decreased at 38.4 micrograms/liter and was the most sensitive indicator of toxicity. Survival of fathead minnows exposed to heptachloronorbornene was significantly decreased at 83.5 micrograms/liter after 4 days. The highest concentration having no adverse effect was 25.9 micrograms/liter. The average bioconcentration factor for fish exposed to less than 40 micrograms/liter of this compound in water was 11,200. |
