Abstract
A mercury-contaminated freshwater pond, Reality Lake (RL), was investigated in the vicinity of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Initial results indicated that active bacteria originally isolated from RL affected the speciation and concentration of mercury in flask incubations and in microcosms that simulate the cycling of mercury in the pond. Thus, treatment of such contaminated aquatic systems with active organisms may be a feasible approach to in situ mercury remediation.
