Abstract
The need for a greatly expanded research program for determining the environmental requirements of aquatic life and for developing adequate water quality criteria for its protection is stated. Water quality criteria will be valuable in the prevention and abatement and waste treatment, informing the public and making it an effective force for abatement, providing a basis for uniform regulation, enabling industry to develop a rational waste control program, and assisting in the development and enforcement of legislation.
