Abstract
The report gives results of a pilot plant evaluation of the Hitachi Zosen NOx flue gas treatment process. The project--evaluating selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx on a coal-fired source--operated for 1-1/2 years. A newly developed catalyst, NOXNON 600, was successfully applied at the 0.5 MW pilot plant on a slipstream from George Power Co.'s Plant Mitchell near Albany, GA: it demonstrated 90% NOx removal efficiency for over 5600 hours. Tests to operate the catalyst outside of design specifications showed good tolerance to adverse situations. The project was the first demonstration and evaluation of NOx SCR technology on a coal-fired source in the U.S. Project results indicate that the process is a viable NOx control technology option; however, some technical concerns remain before the technology can be considered commercially available and demonstrated for coal-fired sources in the U.S.
