Abstract
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Emission Standards Division (ESD) is investigating the lime manufacturing industry to identify and quantify hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) emitted from lime kilns ESD requested that EPA's Emissions, Monitoring and Analysis Division (EMAD) conduct the required testing. EMAD issued a work assignment to Pacific Environmental Services Inc. (PES) to conduct a 'screening' test to collect air emissions data as specified in the ESD test request. The primary objective of the testing program was to characterize HAP emissions from a rotary time kiln at the Redland Stone Products Company's facility located in San Antonio, Texas. Based on the pollutant concentrations and emission rates calculated from the results of the screening tests, the kiln may be selected by EPA for further testing. The tests were conducted to quantify the uncontrolled and controlled air emissions of hydrogen chloride (HCI), total hydrocarbons (THC), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs). Emissions from the kiln were controlled by a scrubber. Testing was conducted at the scrubber inlet and at the stack. Inlet and stack runs were conducted simultaneously. Oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were also monitored at each location.
