Abstract
Pollution Prevention (P2) factors are intended for use as general indicators of environmental improvement for the entire life-cycle that has occurred, or might be expected to occur, as a result of implementing a particular P2 activity. A preliminary methodology was developed using a streamlined life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach with the lithographic printing industy. Solvent substitution in blanket and press wash and waterless versus conventional dampening fountain system printing were scored and the P2 factors calculated. For solvent substitution, no apparent increase or decrease in environmental impact was indicated for three different solvents. However, waterless printing showed approximately a 25% decrease in impacts over the conventional system.
