Abstract
The report reviews the potential environmental hazard from the commercial use of the monohalomethanes. Chloro-, bromo-, and iodomethane are produced in commercially significant quantities; fluoromethane is produced in small amounts for use as a laboratory research reagent. The sea is a natural source of all monohalomethanes except fluoromethane. Chloromethane is used mainly for the production of silicones and tetramethyl lead (a gasoline additive). Bromomethane is used principally as a fumigant for soil, enclosed areas, and food products. Iodomethane is used as a laboratory and commercial alkylating agent and in tungsten-halogen lamps; the latter use is shared with chloro- and bromomethane. Information on physical and chemical properties, production methods and quantities, commercial uses and factors affecting environmental contamination, as well as information related to health and biological effects, are reviewed.
