Abstract
The article describes the first-time isolation and measurement of the charging of fine aerosol particles by free electrons, from negative ionic charging. The charge and size of individual particles were measured in a Millikan cell, with charging electric field of 0.82 - 8.2 kV/cm. For particle sizes of 1.1 - 1.7 micrometer diameter, the particle charge values were much larger, and increased faster with particle size, than those predicted and observed for negative ionic charging. The particle charge values showed only slight dependence on the charging electric field. (Copyright (c) 1983 Pergamon Press Ltd.)
