| Abstract |
The purpose of the Level I materials balance for 1,2 dichloroethane (EDC) is to evaluate the sources of release of EDC to the environment. EDC is produced via direct chlorination and oxychlorination of ethylene. EDC is used consumptively in the production of other chemicals such as vinyl chloride, monomer, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, ethyleneamines and vinylidene chloride. EDC is also used in the production of leaded gasoline additives as lead scavenger. Releases of EDC from the production and consumptive uses appear to be the major sources of EDC emissions. |
