Abstract
Studies have been done to find alternatives to restoring or managing lakes by controlling external sources of nutrients. The guiding principle has been to understand and use biological interactions within lakes. This process is called biomanipulation and it is clear from the results that algal abundance and type can be varied substantially by one or more of the following procedures: Elimination of benthivorous fish which recycle phosphorus from sediments; manipulations of algal populations by lowering pH, causing artificial circulation; and increasing abundance of larger herbivorous zooplankters by reducing predation on them.
