Abstract
Secondary clarifiers are crucial to the overall performance of the activated sludge process. Research over the last 40 years indicates that density currents are factors which degrade clarifier performance when not considered in design. However, present designs of most center-feed, peripheral overflow clarifiers fail to adequately control these influences. The document summarizes the results of a full-scale demonstration project which evaluated a unique inlet designed to distribute flow in this type of secondary clarifier equally both horizontally and vertically and prevent the formation of density currents. The inlet failed to create the expected uniformly distributed flow or improve the clarifier's performance.
