Abstract
The occurrence of long range and interurban transport of ozone and/or ozone precursors across the Northeast U.S. has been documented by numerous field studies during the last ten years. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency initiated the Northeast Corridor Regional Modeling Project (NECRMP) during the late 1970's, in part, to develop a regional model capable of simulating regional transport of ozone and its precursors on scales on the order of 1000 km. The resulting Regional Oxidant Model (ROM) is being applied to the Northeast U.S. to evaluate the effectiveness of various control strategies for reducing ozone in this region. This paper summarizes the physical processes encompassed by the model including several that have heretofore been omitted from air quality models on smaller scales, such as cumulus cloud effects on vertical atmospheric motions and nighttime wind shear. The general modeling framework that forms the basis of the ROM system of data preprocessors is also described. Model results from the first simulated episode of the NECRMP data base are presented.
