| Abstract | Collins Lake (24.3 ha) in the Village of Scotia, New York, was hydraulically dredged to a depth of 3 m during the warmer months of 1977 and 1978. About 52,000 cu m of organic sediment were removed from 2.6 ha of lake bottom to an adjacent sedimentation basin with the supernatant water returning to the lake. The curly leaved pondweed, Potamogeton crispus, especially abundant in the lake, did not recolonize the dredged areas through the study period. Alteration of the lake level caused by changes in the outlet resulted in vegetational changes in the littoral zone, such as the decline of the tuckahoe, Peltandra virginica and the increase of the spiked loosestrife, Lythrum salicria. |
