Abstract |
This report describes the results of an exhaust emission testing program conducted on forty 1981 passenger cars. The primary purpose of this program was to examine the emission performance of high-mileage vehicles. Secondary objectives included an assessment of the condition and performance of the emission-related components and the collection of information for development and improvement of Inspection and Maintenance programs. The work was performed by Automotive Testing Laboratories (ATL) at the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty, Ohio. The test vehicles were drawn from the general public in the Columbus, Ohio area using direct mail solicitation. Only vehicles with over 60,000 miles were sought. This resulted in an average odometer reading for the fleet of 71,410. The tests performed included the Federal Test Procedure, the Highway Fuel Economy Test and several short tests. The program began in July, 1983 and was completed in November, 1983. |
