Abstract
In sharp contrast with wastes of other industries, radioactive wastes may not be objectionable as measured by such common characteristics as odors, tastes and biochemical oxygen demand, yet they may be most dangerous because of levels of radioactive energy and long periods of activity. Furthermore, their cumulative effects on living organisms are not too well understood. The intricate and carefully controlled processing of radioisotopes and their manyfold uses in production and research ultimately lead to radioactive wastes in solid, liquid and gaseous forms; and treatment of a waste for decontamination in one form may result in radioactive wastes in another. The report discusses the treatment and disposal of these wastes.
