Abstract | This study was undertaken to identify and recommend promising waste treatment technologies the use of which would minimize the growing threat to public health and environmental quality. Literature searches, sitevisits, and personal communications with experts in the field provided the basis for identifying needed treatment technologies. Most hazardous waste streams are mixtures of pesticides, heavy metals, organic solvents, acids, or bases, and have a high solids concentration. Treatment processes that appear applicable for processing both homogeneous and heterogeneous hazardous waste streams include chemical, biological, and physical treatments. Recommended promising treatment techniques are: Chlorinolysis, wet air oxidation, decomposition by acids and bases, chemical oxidation, other chemical treatments, biological degradation, catalysis, batch and continuous ion exchange, photochemical processing, low-temperature microwave discharge, osmosis/ultrafilttration, and activated carbon adsorption. |
