Abstract
The Great Lakes monitoring program is a cooperative effort involving several government agencies and universities with the USEPA's Great Lakes National Program Office providing overall coordination. A complete description is provided of methods and locations for all nearshore and open lake cruises in 1976 and 1977. In comparing the southern basin survey data from 1976 with the 1977 observations, a large and apparently natural removal of phosphorus occurred between the two surveys. The observed decrease of phosphorus may be due to the severe winter and extensive ice cover of 1976-1977.
