Abstract
Controlled experiments were performed in an unoccupied research house to provide (1) a detailed characterization of the migration patterns of contaminants released indoors from consumer products and (2) a basis for assessment of the exposure implications of contaminant migration and the accuracy of currently used exposure assessment models. To enable relatively detailed spatial and temporal monitoring with readily available instrumentation, carbon monoxide (CO) was chosen as a surrogate contaminant for the investigation. Within an hour after the release was terminated, concentrations approached spatial uniformity even though a central air circulation fan that would have promoted contaminant migration was turned off as part of the experimental design. A single-chamber indoor air quality model provided closer approximation of passive than active exposures. Use of a two-chamber model resulted in better estimates of each type of exposure.
