Abstract
Breakpoint chlorination, as practiced for many years in the water treatment industry provides a physical-chemical means for removing ammonia from wastewaters. Chlorine is added to process waters until a point is reached where the total dissolved residual chlorine has reached a minimum (the breakpoint) and the NH3 minus N has disappeared. In this study sodium hypochlorite was used to oxidize the ammonia in buffered distilled water systems and in raw, secondary and lime clarified municipal wastewaters.
