Abstract
The report evaluates the potential effectiveness of individual home waste treatment systems and estimates the cost implications of increased use of individual systems. A review of previous research into septic tank system failures is summarized. Economic factors which can govern the choice between individual and collective systems are reviewed. The results of several economic analyses of the problem are discussed. A mitre-developed economic model is used to generate both the time stream and the total present value of future costs of sewage treatment on a national basis for projected new individual homes. Simultaneous consideration is given to individual and central systems for a variety of independently specified parameters.
