Abstract
The formation of mutagenic products through combustion and by atmospheric processes has become an area of increased interest. Experiments were performed to examine the effect oxidation processes have on the mutagenicity from compounds found in the particulate phase from wood combustion emissions. Experiments were carried out in a 22.7 cu m Teflon environmental chamber. Two types of experiments were performed, (1) wood smoke irradiations in the presence of nitrogen oxides which are representative of the types of oxidation expected to occur under daytime conditions; (2) wood smoke oxidation by the nitrate radical (NO3) representative of processes expected to occur under nighttime conditions. The particulate matter from the oxidized and non-oxidized mixtures were collected on Teflon-impregnated glass fiber filters. Extractable organic mass was then recovered from the filters and tested for mutagenic activity using the Ames Test bacteria Salmonella typhimurium strains TA100 and TA98.
