Abstract |
The anaerobic fermentation of organic wastes is a stepwise degradation process which is initiated with solubilization of particulate matter and the production of volatile acids from simple and complex organic molecules, and is completed by the evolution of methane and carbon dioxide. The methane-producing stage appears to be the rate-limiting step in the overall process. The report determines the microbiological kinetic constants of the methane bacteria which ferment hydrogen, utilizing continuous-flow fermentors, and evaluates experimentally the effect of hydrogen on the methane fermentation of volatile acids. |
