Abstract
The objective of this project was to measure the rate at which selected volatile organic carbon (VOC) compounds are being emitted to air from waste-water treatment basins of the pulp and paper industry. The emission rates of methanol, acetone and acetaldehyde were measured and the total hydrocarbon (FID) emission was quantified. Intermediate objectives were: develop a method of trapping, concentrating and analyzing low molecular weight volatiles in the presence of excess water vapor; develop turbulent transport theory using VOC concentrations and micrometeorology to determine flux rate from aerated stabilization basins. A unique cryogenic sampling, concentration, and detection technique was developed along with a general protocol for flux determination called the concentration profile (CP) technique. The CP apparatus was conceived, designed and used in the field for flux determinations.
