Abstract
Three waste treatment systems were used to process liquid swine manure so the effluent could be reused as flush-water. Hydraulic transport was effective in removing manure from all eight buildings. Excess liquid from all three systems was applied to adjacent cropland to achieve nutrient utilization as the final disposal step. Reductions in building odors, manure handling labor, and land requirements for final effluent disposal were major goals of the demonstration. An aeration basin received the manure from two farrowing buildings with a capacity for 14 sows each. As anticipated, solids accumulated in the aeration basin. When the solids content exceeded 4,500 mg/l plugging problems became frequent in the pump and piping system. A lagoon-aeration basin system served two farrowing buildings with a capacity for 28 sows each. The system performed adequately with only minor mechanical difficulties.
