Abstract |
The effects of over 250 chemical substances on biological treatment processes are presented in a format which permits its use as an operations handbook. The information, arranged in a matrix form with the chemical substances presented in alphabetical order, includes descriptions of the chemical; its effects on treatment process operating parameters, especially those associated with the activated sludge treatment process; and the effect of the treatment process on the chemical. Data from full scale, pilot scale, and bench scale studies are reported. An extensive bibliography related to the effects of hazardous materials on biological treatment processes also is presented. Use of the handbook with companion documents detailing contingency plans and response countermeasures to mitigate the effects of spills of these hazardous materials is recommended. |
