| Abstract |
This report, which covers inorganic chemical manufacturing operations, is one of a series of several which examine land-destined wastes from selected industries. The inorganic chemicals industry (Standard Industrial Classification 281) in 1972 had a total of 1,067 plants producing approximately 112 million metric tons of a wide variety of chemicals. Most of the major plants of this industry are located in the Eastern Seaboard States, the Midwest, and the Gulf Coast States. Approximately 40 million metric tons (dry basis) of land-destined wastes were generated by this industry in 1974, of which 2 million metric tons were considered to be potentially hazardous. Some of the major potentially hazardous constituents identified in the waste streams from this industry include: asbestos, lead, mercury, chlorinated hydrocarbons, fluorides, arsenics, and antimony compounds. The most prevalent method of disposal of potentially hazardous wastes from this industry is some form of land disposal, with about 85 percent of the wastes deposited in landfills, lagoons, and dumps. |
