The paper discusses the control of trace metal species in combustion systems. PSI Technology Co., through US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-funded research under the Superfund Innovative Technology Program, has developed and patented the MeIDAS (Metal Immobilization and Decontamination of Aggregate Solids) process. Details of the process can vary depending on the application, but the essential steps are: (1) combine the toxic-metal-containing solid with the appropriate amount of sorbent, (2) form this mixture into pellets or briquettes, placing the metal compounds into intimate contact with the sorbent, and (3) heat-treat the pellets, causing a reaction to form nonleachable metal compounds. Although the MeIDAS process applies to a wide range of metal-contaminated materials, the experiments in the work were conducted to assess its use in the remediation of soils contaminated with organics and metals. |
