Abstract
Currents as a function of wind were calculated by a depth integrated model of Lake Superior. Using the calculated currents, the development of large turbidity plume was numerically simulated. Good agreement between the simulated plume, remote sensing, and ground truth data provided verification of calculated current patterns and much insight into the ultimate fate of pollutants in western Lake Superior as a function of wind. The long range transport of a conservative pollutant from the Duluth-Superior harbor was simulated for westerly winds and for vaiable winds. For westerly winds, the model predicted that the contaminant would be transported along the Wisconsin shore away from the harbor area. For variable winds, the pollutant remained trapped in the southwest corner of the lake.
