Abstract |
A portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) procedure for quantitatively measuring lead in paint in situ is described along with recommended QA/QC practices. The procedure was evaluated using calibration paint films over various substrates and with field samples. Using the K shell X-rays, a typical linear range of 0.2 to 10.0 mg Pb/sq. cm was found. Precisions achieved were 0.1 mg Pb/sq. cm for laboratory standards and 0.3 mg Pb/sq. cm for field samples. At 1.0 mg Pb/sq. cm, accuracy was 0.1 mg Pb/sq. cm. Due to variable attenuation effects, use of the L shell X-ray option with the instrument is recommended only when the paint is known to be thin and consist of only two or three layers. |
