Abstract
The objective of this report is to present the data and the research carried out to develop an analytical test procedure for the analysis of specific organic toxic substances in effluent wastewaters. The procedure is for the analysis of 11 of the 114 priority or toxic pollutants identified by the EPA as Category 8 - Phenols. The procedures consist of several steps, including extraction, concentration, clean up, derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide, and quantification by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection and flame-ionization. The report describes the work done leading to selection of the procedures and includes data and information on a literature search, sample preservation procedures, elution of the compounds on various gas chromatographic columns, several solvent extraction efficiencies versus pH, stability of compounds in water-soluble solvents, sample extract clean up procedures, and application of the procedures on effluent wastewaters.
