Abstract
Stationary source stack sampling procedures are used to determine the amount of emissions as required under the Resource Conservation Recovery Act, Appendices VIII and IX, and the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) of 1990, Title III. Sampling procedures are costly and require much planning and time to complete. Most effort on implementing quality assurance (QA) in the past has centered on the analytical and laboratory portion of the test. However, the laboratory result, no matter how good, is only as good as the field sample that has been presented. Errors occurring during field sampling might not be discovered until after the sampling phase of the test is completed and after samples are in the analytical phase. This could result in another expensive sampling trip. One way to reduce the chance of errors is to have and follow a QA plan. The paper describes the planning phase for the field study, errors that may occur during the sampling phase, and how the QA plan might prevent or minimize errors during field sampling.
