Abstract
This report addresses the issues of (1) classifying monitoring objectives for the major pollutants involved in atmospheric photochemical reactions--the nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), nitric oxide (NO) nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and oxidants (Ox)--(2) devising a set of monitoring station types to meet those objectives; and finally (3) prescribing procedures for identifying suitable locations for the different types of monitoring stations. A literature review suggests that the objectives of past data gathering efforts can be classified according to the spatial area to be represented, the nature of the pollutant as a reactant or product photochemical processes, and sometimes, whether the impacts of a particular source are of concern. A site typology based on spatial representativity with subcategories dependent on more specialized monitoring objectives (i.e., source-oriented, product-oriented, or reactant-oriented objectives) is presented. The requirements for locating the different types of monitoring station have been outlined in flow chart form.
