Abstract
Studies were carried out to evaluate ingestion doses to individuals and the local population resulting from the operation of the Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) reprocessing plant in West Valley, N.Y. These studies involved evaluations of radionuclide intakes from ingestion of fish, deer, and locally grown food items and included surveys of fishing and deer hunting in the vicinity of the plant. The maximum dose commitment to an individual from the fish pathway during 1974 was estimated to have been 1.4 millirem whole body and 7 millirem bone. The maximum whole-body dose commitment to an individual from ingestion of venison from deer kills in 1970 was estimated to have been 1.4 millirem. Dose estimates for the local population from the fish and deer pathways indicated that the integrated whole-body population dose commitments from each of these pathways was about 0.1 man-rem per year. Measurements of radionuclide concentrations in locally grown food items indicated that the operation of the NFS plant had not resulted in any measurable increase in the radionuclide intakes of the population living in the vicinity of plant from the pathway.
