Abstract
The National Sanitation Foundation's (NSF) Water Quality Index (WQI) is an empirical expression which integrates nine significant physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters of water quality into a single number to provide a uniform, consistent, and comprehensible term for measuring and reporting water quality. To demonstrate the responsiveness of WQI to variations in water quality and to determine optimum frequencies for computing and reporting WQI, a comprehensive field sampling, laboratory analysis, and data management program was developed for applying WQI to selected sites on the Kansas River and its major tributaries. Seventeen parameters were measured (the nine in WQI and eight related parameters) on nearly 600 samples from 26 sites (14 main stem and 12 tributary).
