Abstract
An extensive study of commercially available home water treatment units has been conducted over a 3-year period to examine organics reduction and microbiological factors. Phase 1 addressed trial protocol development and pilot testing using spiked and unspiked New Orleans tap water (6 units on each test). Before and after filter tests were run for trihalomethanes (THMs), non-purgeable total organic carbon (NPTOC), standard plate count (SPC) bacteria, endotoxin, silver levels (when appropriate), chlorine residuals and other peripheral tests. Based on the pilot tests, unspiked tap water was selected as the main means of testing.
